Linda Sours Campbell

August 3rd, 1951 - August 14th, 2021

"My garden of flowers is also my garden of thoughts and dreams. The thoughts grow as freely as the flowers, and the dreams are as beautiful" - Abram L. Urban

Biography

Linda Sours Campbell of Luray, Virginia passed away peacefully in her home at Khimaira Farm on August 14, 2021, after a three-year struggle with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  She was born August 3, 1951, and was the daughter of the late Oscar Thomas Sours and Gernie Meadows Sours of Luray. Always known for her vibrant and energetic spirit, Linda shared her enthusiasm for life and her love of goats, conservation, and a rural lifestyle with everyone she met throughout her 70 years of a life well-lived.

On June 5, 1971, she married her high school sweetheart, R. Leith Campbell, and embarked on a union of more than 50 years that would produce four daughters, four grandchildren who knew her as “Bobba”, and countless successful family businesses. She served as a role model for-and will be greatly missed by- the rest of her surviving family: Julena Campbell; Dr. Kendra Campbell and husband Eddy Rivera and their children Maya Rivera Campbell and Rio Rivera Campbell; Briana Campbell and partner Johnny Santiago; Corina Nicol and husband Josh Nicol and their children Carmindy Rain Nicol and Oscar Alexander Nicol.

She is also survived by her siblings: Shirley Sours Lewis of Savannah, Georgia; Gail Sours Wyatt and husband Billy Wyatt of Luray; sister Carolyn Sours Swiger of White Bluff, Tennessee; Dwayne Anthony Sours and wife Connie Seal Sours of Luray; John Vernon Sours and wife Nellie Cahoon Sours of Luray; Ernest Jackson Sours and wife Robin Miller Sours of Luray; Brenda Sours Rogers and husband Chris Rogers of Rileyville, Virginia. She was also loved by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Linda was preceded in death by two brothers: Oscar T. Sours, Jr, and James Lynwood Sours, and brother-in-law Jack Lewis.

For many years, Linda was the business manager for her family’s business, Oscar T. Sours Excavating, a well-known and beloved contractor in Page County and beyond.

Linda and Leith established Khimaira Farm in 1978 and it became one of the first commercial goat dairies in the state of Virginia. Linda loved sharing her knowledge of, and passion for, goats and farm life with countless visitors to the farm over the years. Her homemade goat milk ice cream was always a hit among farm tour patrons, be it elementary school kids, veterinary college students, or tour buses full of travelers from across the world. Her pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit helped spearhead the agritourism industry in Page County.

In more recent years, the farm has become a popular wedding venue, attracting clients from around the world who appreciate her passion for conservation and sustainability. Many couples have noted that the strong bonds of love and dedication they witnessed between Linda and Leith, and the strong work ethic and integrity that they exhibited and instilled in their daughter Corina, who helped run the thriving family business, was what drew them to the venue. Linda loved working with the wedding couples and frequently said she felt she gained “new children” with every wedding as she welcomed them to the farm on their first visit with a hug and worked tirelessly to deliver the wedding of their dreams.

Linda’s drive and ambition helped fuel the expansion of the dairy goat industry well beyond the fields of Khimaira Farm. In the 1980s, she began exporting breeding stock internationally. Linda planned and executed the complex logistics needed to purchase, test, quarantine, and safely ship thousands of goats to more than 30+ countries. She was even known to travel with the animals on cargo planes to ensure her high standards of animal health and safety were met. Linda often stayed at the receiving farms for multiple weeks to provide guidance and to transfer her in-depth knowledge of best practices to the recipients as they set up their own dairy goat operations. In 1992, Linda was awarded the Virginia International Trade award. For more than four decades, she provided international consulting services for farm management and marketing. For much of the time, she also was a volunteer for VOCA (Volunteers for Overseas Cooperative Agriculture), through the USAID-funded Farmer-to-Farmer program. Linda truly made a lasting global impact.

Linda always enjoyed assisting volunteer organizations and served in many leadership roles for numerous entities and was commonly elected as President/Chair. She served nearly 40 years on the board of the American Dairy Goat Association including multiple terms as President, in other positions on the Executive Committee, and eventually as Director Emerita. She was co-founder and Past President of the American Goat Federation. She was appointed by three Secretaries of Agriculture to the USDA’s National Sheep Industry Improvement Center, serving multiple terms, including as Chair, managing a multimillion-dollar budget. Additionally, she served on the National Advisory Committee on Foreign Animal and Poultry Diseases Subcommittee for the National Animal Identification System, and US Sheep and Goat Board.

In the conservation field, Linda served 35 years on the board for the Shenandoah Valley Soil and Water Conservation District. She also served on the boards for the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Virginia Soil and Water Board (the first woman to serve on the board and reappointed by three governors including terms as Chair), the Virginia Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (President), Shenandoah Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council, and the Page County Water Quality Committee.

As a lifelong resident and engaged citizen of Page County, Linda also served on the boards of the Luray-Page County Chamber of Commerce, Shawnee Girl Scout Council, and local PTAs. Not one to remain indoors, Linda jumped at every opportunity to be a field trip chaperone, day camp leader, or overnight counselor and solver-of-all-problems on many girl scout camping trips.

In her “spare time”, Linda was a contributing writer for numerous national/international magazines and the author of a book The Whole Goat Catalog. Linda was a popular invited speaker on a range of topics for national and international organizations, including agriculture, finance and business management, leadership, marketing, web design, volunteerism, herbology, and parliamentary procedures.

Linda was a trailblazer her entire life. She was often at the forefront of industries that would later become increasingly popular. She was early to recognize the information sharing and marketing capabilities of the internet. In the late 1990s, Linda and Leith established Khimaira-GreenEarthHost Webhosting which has served thousands of clients, both locally and internationally. Even in the last days of her life, she continued to work side by side with her unwaveringly supportive husband to manage the business and provide tech support.

Linda’s energy and capacity for taking on new projects were seemingly boundless as she successfully balanced the management of multiple businesses, a life of community service, and raising four independent and dynamic women who all take after their mother in a variety of ways. While there is no denying the positive impact her successful businesses, volunteer work, and selfless dedication to others had on the world, all of these achievements are secondary to who she was as a mother. No matter what initiative she was running, the miles she traveled, or how long her day was, she managed to prepare home-cooked meals with love for her family and had a way of making her daughters feel unconditionally loved. Just like her mother Gernie passed these traits onto her, Linda instilled this strength, passion, work ethic, kindness and drive into her daughters. Her impact will live on through them and her grandchildren every day.

A reporter once asked Linda during an interview what she enjoyed doing most. She was quick to answer, “Being with my family and friends, volunteering, goat farming, singing, dancing, gardening, anything involved with creating things from cooking to carpentry, and living life to its fullest”! Linda did all of the above and more. She will be sorely missed by many.

No in-person services are planned at this time. Online remembrances and messages of sympathy may be shared with her family and friends at: MyKeeper.com/profile/LindaCampbell

I was always amazed at the whirlwind that was Linda. Her energy was contagious. I loved being around her but was also in awe of her very serious work ethic. She could accomplish so much in her hotel room after a long day of conferencing and networking while I would be moaning about being exhausted. I admired her vastly and it hurts to realize that she will not be there at goat functions as the pandemic winds up. She was a role model, mentor, always willing to share her goat knowledge and expertise. I treasure the times I got to be with her. I always looked forward to what new, crazy, goat knickknacks she would be wearing the next time I saw her. She was great medicine when it came to infusing the rest of us with enthusiasm for goat work. Her absence will be felt so much in the goat world.

I was very saddened to hear of Linda's passing. I spoke with Linda many times as she helped me learn about the c-Panel, websites and managing email. She was an awesome lady and I enjoyed our conversations. Both email and telephone. She is deeply missed. I always felt comforted to know that if I ran into a problem she would be there to help me. She loved what she did, loved helping people, and I am sorry for the family's loss. She was an amazing, warm, kind, and generous human being. The world is a much emptier placed without people like Linda.

We had our wedding at Linda’s farm and it was the beautiful venue. Every guest LOVED it just as much as we did. I remember Linda taking the reigns on decorating for me, and she did an amazing job and I couldn’t thank her enough. The news of Linda’s passing is incredibly sad. But I am thankful to see and and know from my own experience that everyone she interacted with will have a happy and loving memory of Linda. She touched so many lives in a positive and inspiring way and these memories of her will live on. My thoughts are with Linda’s family during this challenging time.

Fun Story: Greg and I showed up in July or August of 2017 on a Saturday to check the place out. Linda and Leith invited us to have something off the grill that was ready for the wedding later that day. While eating we told them about some of Greg and my goofy stories, and let them know we loved everything about their place. Linda hesitated and said she could get me in the weekend before Thanksgiving. Leith looked at her and reminded her they usually stopped the week earlier because weather got bad that late in the year. I can remember the look Linda gave and I wish I knew what she conveyed to Leith ("they are pretty pathetic, lets do this" is what I imagine :-) We were married Nov 19, 2016 in a thoroughly "Classy Hogwarts/Jedi" wedding.

Shenanigans ensued.

I have many pictures with Linda in the wings, but here is where she swopped in when at the reception a friend (looking mortified) spilled red wine all over my dress.

Love and prayers to the Campbell family. You have big shoes to fill.

My husband and I were married at the farm In 2013. The timing of it was incredible as I found Linda’s page a few years prior dream planning. Just so happened the only weekend that worked for us was just cancelled when I called to ask about it. Linda told me to come by the next day and she would hold it for me. And we did. We really felt like family during the whole experience.

Three years later we were expecting and I reached out to Linda on a whim to see if we could stop by the farm for maternity pictures. Linda has our wedding page open on the table and gave us the warmest hug and congratulations when we arrived.

She is genuinely someone who shares her heart and you can feel it. All of our love and prayers to friends and family that are missing her today and always.

The first time I met Linda she was having a birthday party for all of us five year-olds and birthing goats at the same time. She could pitch a tent in record time, make a mean Bunsen burner out of a tuna can and dance with a van holding Girl Scouts to Roll On like no one else. As I grew up I realized she also was always running multiple businesses and providing us with a constant example of how to be a strong woman. 70 years seemed too short but what a life she packed into that time.

I will miss my dear sister, Linda, so much! We have always had a close bond and I was glad to be 1 of her 'older' sisters. It has been such a pleasure to watch her journey, growing up, marrying the love of her life, having 4 beautiful girls and 4 precious grandchildren. Although we lived miles apart, I always made time to visit with her when I came back for 'home visits'. Each time was as if time stood still and we were girls again, laughing and singing, sharing our stories. God blessed me in that I have had this time with my dear Linda. Please know that I love you, dear Leith, and appreciate all that you have been for our Linda. Same goes with the girls.... like the rest of my nieces and nephews, I feel like you all are just like my own children! I love you all so much and your Momma was SO PROUD of each of you!! Hugs and more hugs are being sent from TN. Hope you feel my arms around you!

I am sad to hear the news this morning of our dear friend Linda. I am glad that she made it to 70, but from my point of view, it still seems too young.

I met Linda back in the mid 70’s after I was given a dairy goat from my grandfather for Christmas. Linda and Leith lived near by at the first Khimaira farm up in Woodward Hollow. Julena was not even 2 years old yet. Linda said she needed some help, so being about 14, I offered so make some extra money and learn about Dairy Goat farming. I did not have a driver’s license yet, but my folks did not care if I drove the truck 3 or so miles down the road. Besides, at that time, even Linda did not get her drivers’s license! For the next 3 years, every day, at 7 am and 7 pm, I helped milk the goats. Yes, before school and after dinner, EVERY DAY for 3 YEARs. I think I only missed 1 day.

During those 3 years, Linda and Leith taught me about organic gardening, making our own yogurt, butter and cheese. We shared many, many hours together milking the girls, sometimes over 35 needed to be milked twice a day. She was my personal teacher of the world, and I really appreciated her wisdom. When Kendra was a “bun in the oven”, and Linda was a little sick, her mom Gernie would take her place to help out. So of course, Gernie and I spent many hours together. She was terrific. Gernie and Oscar would hire me from time to time to do odd jobs and mow their lawn by Hawksbill Creek Dam. Several times, the ‘girls’ would go down by the wild growth and get all into the poison Ivy…Linda was super sensitive to poison Ivy, and so within hours milking the goats, her hands would swell up….Gernie to the rescue! I guess Gernie and I were less sensitive, and never got poison ivy as bad as Linda did.

Thanks to knowing Linda, Gernie and Oscar, When I would be walking those 4 miles home from school instead of waiting 2 hours for the bus ride, Linda’s long haired brothers and sisters would see me and give me a ride in the dump trucks they were driving for their father’s business. It was great always knowing there were folks like them around.

Eventually, Khimaira was too small, so Linda and Leith moved the farm closer to my home near Stoney Man. By then I had my driver’s license, but I don’t think Linda did! I helped the construction workers building the first barn and Milking Parlor (carried boards and block mostly). I believe “Briana” was a bun in the oven at that time. I do not recall the order of the daughters, but I do remember cute little Julena being the first. They had 2 Sheepdogs, Bufford and Chasta, and Julena would call them “Buf-chaf”. I worked with Linda until I left for college in August of 1979. Linda wrote a nice letter of recommendation for me that helped me get accepted into Blue Ridge Community College Vet Tech program. It was in this program where I met my wife and mother of my children, Ellen.

I was a long haired hippie type, but I loved the Sours family, Linda and Leith…But I always wondered why Leith did not grow his hair long, as was customary for folks during the organic gardening era of the 70’s?

To wrap it up, Linda was an awesome, beautiful Sister Earth back in the 70’s when I knew her best. My teenage time with her was so educational, she helped mold me into the earth loving, Brother Earth that I am today. I am sad she is gone, but she has left such an awesome legacy behind to carry on. To the daughter’s and grandkids, your mom/Bobba was really cool and you should be very proud. To Leith, I am sad your life partner is gone, but you were very lucky to have had such an awesome woman to share your life.

May my friend Linda Rest in Peace.

-Dino

We got married at Khimaira on 8/30/2014. It was a wonderful day and Linda brought so much care to make sure the wedding went well. I appreciated her passion for conservation and recycling decorations. I will always remember being greeted by Linda and her fur babies. She was an amazing (seemingly renaissance) woman and I'm lucky to have met her.

Linda was an amazing woman, we were so thankful to have met her at a bridal show when my husband and I were looking for venues. We told her that we were really looking for an April wedding and she made it so that we could have the perfect day by opening the weekend before she normally would. My husband and I got married April 29 2017 and the day couldn’t have been better with the help of Linda. We will forever be thankful for those gestures and never forget that smile. Prayers to the family during this time!

Linda and I have worked closely over the past 20 years while I ran my B&B and web design business. She was so helpful to me whenever I had a question. She opened her business up to our garden club for tours. Yes was always her answer when asked a special favor. It’s hard to imagine how she took on all that she did. Linda was a truly special lady and will live on in our hearts.
She in in God’s Hands now. May she now Rest In Peace.

Linda was a big reason that our wedding felt so special. She took time and cared (we were having Mojitos and couldn’t find enough mint- so the night before our wedding she cooked a mint simple syrup for us). We fell in love with her farm - so much that we came back every year on our anniversary to snap a photo. She always greeted us with open arms and could remember the smallest detail about our wedding (9/12/2014). We didn’t get to make it last year due to the pandemic. Her love and warmth touched so many. Sending my love to her family.
