Bruce Alexander Jones

September 12th, 1952 - June 17th, 2021

Biography

Bruce A. Jones, 68, loving husband of Patricia Cukor Jones for 40 years, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2021 at University Hospital in Augusta, GA following a brief illness.

Born in Yonkers, NY, on September 12, 1952, Bruce was the son of the late Samuel T. and Elizabeth H. Jones. He earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and was a licensed Professional Engineer in both South Carolina and Georgia. He worked primarily in construction management, for both Draper & Associates and Cushman & Wakefield in Atlanta. He loved guitars, fishing and cars — the older the better. He spent hours in the garage restoring classic cars, and he was a member of the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America and the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America. He was also a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, an interest he shared with his father. And like his father, he could fix anything. A longtime resident of Atlanta, Bruce relocated with Pat to Aiken, SC when he retired five years ago.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Leslie Jones, and her husband Robert Cusumano; his nieces, Katherine, Kristen and Cara Cusumano; and his great nephew, Maxwell Floody, all of New York, NY. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pam and Harold Lassers of Traverse City, MI.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Aiken. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations for a memorial bench and tree be sent to: Bruce Jones Memorial Bench, Georgia Institute of Technology, 790 Atlantic Drive, Atlanta, GA, 30332-0355.

This page is run by his sister, Leslie, and his nieces, Katie and Kristen.

Pat, I am so sorry for your loss. I just received my Georgia Tech alumni magazine and was so surprised to read about Bruce’s passing in June. Terry and I so enjoyed meeting you and seeing Bruce again after 44 years when we visited in 2019. Belated prayers for you and your families. The world is a better place because of Bruce, he will be missed!

I visited Uncle Bruce and Aunt Pat in North Hatley at Hovey Manor in the early fall of 2018, after I graduated college. I don't have many photos from the trip, because much of it was spent hanging with the family and enjoying each other's company. I did take this photo of the lake in front of the house, where we spent a good amount of time that weekend. My favorite memory of the weekend was when we decided to go out for a "fancy" dinner, to one of the top rated restaurants in the area—a restaurant found by my mom on TripAdvisor. We were pretty shocked when we had driven 45 minutes to what was essentially a Canadian Olive Garden. I remember Uncle Bruce tearing up from laughing so with us at our mistake—he always had a way of appreciating out the humor in every day life.

Dear Pat,
Sharon and I extend our sympathies to you and Bruce's family.
He was a great friend and I enjoyed the many hours he and shared together shooting sporting clays in Edgefield. He will be missed at our Saturday and Wednesday ham radio groups meetings and lunches.

I started talking with Uncle Bruce about visiting Aiken for the biannual Steeplechase — something I think he knew I'd be all about, as a serious horse girl when I was a kid — in late 2016. I'd seen a cherry-red '50s Ford for sale on the side of the road near Woodstock, Vermont and emailed him a couple of photos of it, asking if I could stay for a weekend around the Steeplechase. (He said yes, of course, but more importantly, he sent back a photo of Grandma in Grandpa Sam's car, a pristine cousin to the rusted-out car I'd seen in Vermont.) I finally made it to Aiken in spring 2017, and going to the Steeplechase was the very first thing we did when I arrived. We stood by the post placing fake bets — that is, picking our favorite horses based on their names ("Devil's Wrangler," "Maximum Horsepower"). Ours rarely won. I think I told him that the next time we went to the Steeplechase, I wanted to be wearing a better hat to really get in the racetrack mood.

Words will never express how this has affected me in grief, heartbreak, but also in gratitude to be by your side ‘Pat’ during these weeks. Also to be with Leslie, his sister, who devoted time, energy and tons of love to Bruce and Pat. Friends Dewey and Russell, always available to help, support, and serve. Pat’s sister and brother-in-law, Pam and Harold, who arrived within hours to comfort, assist, guild, and protect. My husband Matt, The Cousin, who jumped in the car at any sign of “I need you”. We love you Pat, we adored your husband Bruce, we prayed with all our hearts and will continue. So the photo is our accomplishment snowshoeing to the top of Sun Peak in Park City, Utah. It took Bruce a lot of energy to smile at that point. But he was always willing to run with the crowd even when he would prefer to be in a lodge relaxing.

The day after we took these photobooth photos at Cara's wedding, we took Uncle Bruce for our inaugural slices of Prince Street Pizza. We were all, obviously, psyched — but he was especially. Like a kid in a candy store.

Dear Pat,
Early on in my career, I had a business trip to Atlanta and added a few more days to visit family. It was the first time I hung out with Bruce. He was thoughtful, kind but when he showed me his collection of VWs, his eyes lit up and his enthusiasm was contagious. It reminded me of my dad and his woodworking hobby. That experience stayed with me and soon after I bought my first car, which was ….. a VW. Any other car I looked at did not compare. I loved that car and kept it for 17 years.

I am saddened by all that you have gone through over the past few weeks. My deepest sympathies and condolences are extended to you, Leslie and your families.

love and hugs, marlene

Dear Pat,
Words can't express our intense shock and sorrow at Bruce's untimely passing. We are blessed to have had you and Bruce as great friends and neighbors for the all-too-short five years since the four of us moved into Woodside just a month apart. We cherish the times we had with you both, dining and just hanging out together, and will miss Bruce deeply.
